The referee's indecision is final

so moving on to the pack

i'm not going to distinguish between open and blind sides as the distinction is blurred nowadays, so we are looking for 6 nominees. think this is going to be the opposite to the scrum half thread - ie. lots of candidates and some pretty even matches

I suppose the role of a prop has changed a lot over the years. Both way before my time but Trevor Skerrett and (even further back) Mick Scott are two names that spring to mind.

In the modern era, Kingy for all his faults did a lot of good things for the club. Had Sam Moa stayed longer he'd be worth a nomination too.

Would crooksy be classed as a prop or second row ? If prop he'd be one of my choices , would need time to decide on the other , top of my head out of skerrett , omeley , stone , Harrison

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.;

Trev Skerrett is a shoe in for me one of the best props I have ever seen...............

Charlie stone, Vince Farrah and the 50s Mick Scott I never saw but the record speaks for itself

Harold Bowman from way back - 451 appearances between 1921 and 1935 putting him third in Hull's all time appearances list. In three season between 1925 and 1928 he made an astonishing 129 appearances. He scored 75 tries for the club including 16 in one season and twice toured down under with Great Britain. Harold was a local lad who never wanted to play for anyone else. He died at just 55 whilst watching his son Keith play for Hull in a Championship semi final at Boothferry Park.

A very strong position for Hull. Of those I've seen play Skerrett would be my favourite. Rock hard, heaps of energy and a hard (but fair) hitter. A truly outstanding defender, he stopped them in their tracks head on but also pulled off some cover tackles that would be outstanding for anyone, let alone a prop. He was a key man in the trophy winning era of the early 80s who usually featured in the man of the match voting in the big games. Unfortunately a serious knee injury wrecked his career and he never came back the same player but at his peak awesome and one of the few players to get the Aussies respect. Not far behind for me was Karl Harrison, another real hard man and a leader in the Brian Smith revival era. But there's plenty more just covering those I have seen, Charlie Stone, O'Meeley, Mick Harrison (though his best years were before my clear memories) were among the very best but there have been quite a few others that have got the odd representative honour which shows they were more than decent Farrar, Tindall, King for example. And that's without the famous 50's pack which was before my time but I'm sure the old timers will have fond memories of Scott and Jim Drake and maybe more. Finally going way back to the 20's there's a guy called Harold Bowman who went on 2 tours Down Under, represented GB and England and played over 450 games for Hull - that looks real quality and service.

For Lee Crooks I would count him as a 2nd row for Hull as that was where the majority of his very best performances for the club came from. Over his career he no doubt counts as a prop but his most of his best games in that position were for teams other than Hull.

Of those I've seen

Mick Scott
Jim Drake
Mick Harrison
Jim Macklin
Karl Harrison
Keith Tindall
Charlie Stone
Kelvin Skerrett
Paul King

were the best, assuming Keith Boxall and Lee Crooks are classed as second row forwards.

Mick Harrison (first spell) and Kelvin Skerrett the best of the best.

yes we'll go for lee crooks in the second row he played all his early stuff in that position including the 1982 and 83 cup finals. by 1985 he had switched to prop and played prop in the 85 final

My personnel favourites are Trevor Skerret and Mick Harrison but have fond memories of Andy Dannatt Tim Street Ogre among others
