Re: junior rl 1st summer season : Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:52 pm
I was at the meeting at shaw cross on Wednesday which was a BARLA youth meeting, there was very long and interesting discussions about summer rugby and that Yorkshire Youth would be willing to run Winter rugby (Oct-may) from U12's upwards should there be any interest, the consensus is that Summer rugby is not working for junior teams (with the exception of U7's-U11's) and despite being told that no games would be cancelled due to hard ground and injuries would not be effected by the change in seasons prior to the season started, there certainly has been an effect on both accounts listening to some in accounts in the room, with other issues also coming to view, such as sun protection/drinks breaks and children removing protective wear due to heat (helmets/shoulder pads)
I think that there is a good degree of support for teams returning to winter rugby and that most in the room felt they had been rail roaded in to voting in favour of moving to summer rugby following 2 previously clear "No Votes" failed to get the decision that the RFL & YJARL wanted.
I doubt this is the last we will hear of this, it seems it's a burning issue
But if you're on about the YJARL delegates meeting from Monday night I can't answer your question as I wasn't in attendence :thumb:

Crikey :?

its getting very political again , what the kids don't need is a split IMHO .
the system as worked fine for years .

The solution is simple .

1 Yorkshire junior delegates get together and have a meeting (expenses paid of course)
2 . no apologies in fact unless its death , loss of a limb or your on holiday if you don't show for this meeting you get wasted into the north sea
3 forget the vote after coffee and mints they all draw straws and the losers as to be the one who admits they where wrong to go to summer.

all views are my own of course and have nowt to do with either my lads or their respective clubs but i know a lot of the dads from both clubs think winter is the best

will anyone ever admit responsibility or error in the YJRL?

i know they do a fine job but come one its not going to work go back to winter

I would not "Dis" YJARL as a fantastic organiser of Junior Rugby and a hightly successful organisation, however on the dicission to move to summer rugby for all age groups I feel they made the wrong decission and maybe a re-think is on the cards. :thumb:

im still in the lets give it time bracket and work through the problems rather than just turning back after a few months.

there was always going to be teething problems, the biggest let down for me has been the lack of fixtures so bigger groups is a must.its pretty poor that teams are having to arrange friendlies mid-season to fill in the weeks and keep the players interested.

i can only speak for my club but the playing pitches are in good nick with plenty of grass on them and this last weeks rain has made it perfect for playing and training on.

again no league fixture this weekend but we have a game on sunday against idf select 13 from france,no idea about them but it will give the lads a good workout before two tough games against east leeds then another derby with lock lane which will be a very strange game given that most of them are team mates from school and the PARENTS are actually making good friends and have finally taken a leaf out of the kids book which is what happens on the pitch stays on the picth and when its over there all mates again. :GROUPHUG:

The benefits of summer rugby such as training in the light, reasonable temperatures making improvements in skill development far outweigh any negatives, certainly after only a few months. Such a change will always have initial issues but nothing that can't be improved over time and experience.

There is at the moment big breaks in the calendar as you said which does need looking at. We should have Crig next week after a long lay off though I believe they have the cup match, not that I'm too concerned as we have 9 players including both our 6&7 out poorly or injured from a now squad of 23!

Not sure what'll happen with your east Leeds games as we have drawn them in Leeds and district cup which needs to be played before end of June.

We are playing east Leeds next weds night so both yourselves and east Leeds will be free for the weekend.

Your spot on about the benefits for summer rugby and I still think it will be a positive result in the long run. :thumb:

Ah right, fingers crossed we can get some players back fit then.

Absolutely, and it's also not as if we have long medittaranean like summers affecting the pitches, it's much worse in winter. Still, the Luddites will have their say!

certainly don't want a split in camp site .half summer half winter .

criggs pitch is holding up ok but already some of the refs are having concerns over some of the junior pitches, more so these that are a fair distance from club house to pitch .

i think the main worry this w/e is flood and wind

crigg have a friendly this weekend before the face arguably their toughest opponents since the hull teams .
both hull games were different in many ways and it could quite easily of been an all hull final in the yorkies . just got a feeling Lockers Crigg will be an even tighter game at fev an will produce a very very worthy winner.

BTW . you kept the france game close to your chest 8) how did it go ?
