I don't claim to be a defensive mastermind, but I'm pretty sure the forwards are supposed to slide over in that situation, rather than expecting a halfback to tackle a 6'2, 100kg backrower one on one.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but if you think a player with international caps and a 15yr career in SL was, at best, average then I genuinely wonder what you are watching.
The fact(?) that he wasn’t wanted by a top club (again, your opinion unless you can corroborate) isn’t proof of much either. After all, Ryan Bailey played at Leeds for years.

He didnt slide over, he ran through Browns weak tackle. Expecting a halfback to tackle a forward is not out of the ordinary, the good ones can usually do it. Lam to name one was a superb defender, smaller than Brown but could bring a big guy down. Its called technique.

More to do with a shortage of good English halfbacks that he played for England. Despite this shortage, no big SL club found the desire to ever have Brown pull on their shirt until Warrington became desperate.

Ryan Bailey was actually a decent prospect in his younger years, he just never kicked on but always did a job for Leeds. He also had international caps and a long career.....

We’ll have to agree to differ though I would say I would imagine that Brown is held in much higher regard by his peers than he is by you.

I mean our forwards were supposed to slide over, so you have a halfback and a forward tackling him rather than just a halfback. Granted, ideally Brown would come up with a try-saver, but I'd put that one more on the forwards getting caught up in the middle and not being mobile enough to shift over. There is a reason all teams draw up plays to try to isolate a second rower running at a halfback.

Its hard for the defence to get across if the attacker runs through one of your team mates before the sliding defence can get across and help out. Brown was supposed to take the legs and the next player in should of been over the top but the Aussie (i forget who it was) ran straight through Browns tackle giving the inside defender no chance of getting across. There is no doubt at all that it was a terrible attempted tackle that ultimately cost us the World Cup. Brown should never of been in the team, Williams should and he would of nailed that tackle.
