Good to have options. As a hooker I rate Powell and it’s not an easy position to recruit in so to have him tied down is good. It’ll be interesting to see how Woods develops at Leigh this year. I thought he looked a little nervous at times last year, so to play a full season at a good level will help.

The biggest news is probably the youngest player. He looked a top talent in the academy series and I’m sure people will have sat up and took notice. He’s got a couple of great mentors to learn from over the course of that deal.

I can hear the howls now but I am glad to see Sam being given a vote of confidence. Smith is a no brainer given the rave reviews. Woods is the interesting one as he is going out on loan. I wonder if he will still be in the halves this time next year or will we be looking to bulk him up and play him at loose forward given his lack of pace.

I think we should be in the market for a new 9 next year. Powell does a decent job there but we need a smooth operator like Dermott was, somebody who can pose a bigger threat in attack and has a bit of trickery about him. Powell will be very good reliable back up though.

I would rather Woods stay here and learn from Lam. Why bring in a great half back as coach and then send your young half back out on loan?

Because he will learn far more playing and getting game time than hanging around Wigan not getting any game time (especially as reserve grade is a non-entity and he will likely not get much, if any first team action unless there is a major injury crisis). You can only learn so much from talking to a coach than you can playing week in week out - I am sure the Wigan coaching staff will monitor him carefully.

Playing regularly at Championship level will be a good test for him.

Great news about Woods and Smith, excited to see how they progress. Powell - it depends how much cap space he's taking up I suppose. I think most starting SL hookers are better than him, but the money saved on him may well allow us to spend more on a Williams, Greenwood etc.

Woods training with you guys as normal, joining up with us the odd evenings our PT status now gives us - seems like a win win

No one in the club seems to have anything but praise for Powell. Perhaps we should count up his Grand Final winners medals and compare them to some of those other players who are so much better.

Let's not forget the reduction in interchanges next season. Powell's ability to do 80 mins is a huge bonus allowing us to keep the props rotating.
