it certainly originated in the US (baseball was the first to award rings, but even NASCAR does it now as well NFL, NBA, MLB ...), but the trend is probably following the NRL who copied it off the Yanks (via Allan Zreik, a jeweller who suggested it to the ARL in 1997).
