It’s getting pretty boring hearing all these lads say it’s their dream to play in the NRL. I get it may be the case but they really need to concentrate on improving themselves as players so they can get in a position to go and not only survive but excel in that league.

As things stand Gildart is in poor form and has been found wanting against reasonably average opposition so far and then you’ve got players like Sutton and Burgess who are/have been out of form.

I don’t blame these lads for fancying it but from young Wigan lads I’d love to hear a bit more ‘I’m just concentrating on Wigan’ and a bit less of ‘My dream is to get over to the NRL’.

Some of these kids need to give their heads a wobble. I mean seriously who is he kidding?

I do worry about who is advising these lads away from the club, who is representing them?

I am a massive fan of Gildart he has bags of potential and when he is on form I rate him as one of the best centres in the competition.

He however is currently bang out of form, playing like he is trying to score on every play like he is trying way too hard and looking a shadow of the player he is at his best.

What he needs to do is focus on getting back to basics, get his form back for Wigan and then look to kick on to compete for an England shirt.

He is 2 or 3 years away from being anywhere ready for an NRL contract, get your head down sign a contract with Wigan and continue developing and learning rather than trying to hold the club to ransom to push up your wage.

They all want to give it a try because they all probably have the “return home” ticket pencilled into their contract.

I have been reliably informed discussions have taken place with the bulldogs.

The NRL minimum wage for a squad player is 56k. The average salary for an NRL player is 225k.

Gildart or any of the young lads - Sutton etc could go to the NRL on a reserve team contract and still earn a higher wage than in the super league

If there ambition is to go over and play reserve grade (which both Sutton and Gildart would be doing) for more money, let them go.

I’m not a Sutton fan anyway but neither will reach their potential if that is their ambition.

If I were his advisor I'd tell him to get a new two or three year contract in Superleague before giving it a go in Aus. I've no problem at all with him wanting to test himself over there but feel at this present time it would do him more harm than good.
I do expect we'll lose Bateman and Sutton though.

There's nothing like a bit of forward planning, I would hope the club have already signed replacements

I just wonder what it is about Wigan - we seem to have more players wanting to and actually leaving for the NRL. I know that the club have this we will let you go but want first refusal if you come back but that can't be the sole reason, other clubs do not seem to suffer the same number of players wanting to go, very odd.

Of the three names mentioned Bateman, Sutton and Gildart it is hard to see them making a major success out of the NRL although I suspect Bateman may be the most successful of the thee on sheer will and spirit if nothing else.

Absolutely agree regarding Gildart.

Regards Bateman and Sutton I think we all accept that this will be their last season. I may be in a minority here but personally I’m more than comfortable with that.
