I thought Powell could play like Dermott as he is essentially a half back so passing and directing should be as natural as breathing. Maybe he just plays to instructions.

He may be a half back but he doesn't have the rugby brain and ability to read a game that Dermot had, it was instinct not coached. It would be great for him to work with someone of that quality. With his work rate and defence, if he can add consistent attacking threat he makes it impossible to leave him out of the team.

Martin Dermot was one of those hookers who could get a quick pass out and he could also scoot when needed, but his greatest attribute in my mind was the ability to get the pass out in one movement from the floor with accuracy on it coupled with good length of pass so as to give the receiver a bit of room.

Also he was not afraid of a bit of biff, I will never forget him piling into the Aussie Paul Harrigan ( in Aus 1992 I think) when Harrigan smacked a GB teammate of Dermot, Harigan was about 6" taller and 4st heavier.

I treasure the video of that match along with the Wigan win in Brisbane in 1994, every time I fancy a R/L uplift I watch them.

McDermott was the best 9 I've seen at Wigan, bar none.

Represented Wigan and his country and matched any aussie 9.

Links being made with us for Ken Sio now coming again from the Hull KR side following on from Albert Kelly which was soon quashed also heard multiple times about links with Percival though I think that's a case of 2 & 2 gets 5 with us being without a recognised kicker for 2017.

Indeed, without getting off topic too much, he was just so quick thinking, he could spot what to do and exploit gaps so well with either quick ball (it's all feet placement, something nobody ever mentions about a hooker) or a run, or a step and draw in a defender for someone hitting a gap. There isn't a player like him in SL which saddens me, just like Andy Gregory, both genius on a rugby field, but sadly would be too unfashionable these days.

These were players who could open a defence that was only taken back 5 yards and not 10.

Percival makes sense and would be a great signing, very good centre and kicks goals, 2 birds 1 condom!

Personally wouldn't be thrilled with Percival or Sio signing nothing against either player both decent players however I wouldn't want either player if it meant disrupting Gildart or Gelling though likelihood is now that I'd like to think Gelling is as fixed into the team now as any other regular starter.

Gildart on the wing outside Percival for me. He's far too lightweight for a centre anyway.

Why would St Helens let one of their best players come here without having a better replacement lined up?

Percival would be a great signing, but just can't see it happening.
