How do you know he doesn’t want to stay. IF rumours are to be believed and we are making Bateman marquee we could still offer Sam a new deal however it would be on significantly reduced terms. IF Catalan are prepared to offer him what could easily be double although he may prefer to stay I wouldn’t blame him for going.

I don't know if he wants to stay, or go. None of us do. This thread is 'rumours and signings'. We're just discussing the rumour.

Guess they don’t want to keep paying him what is reported that be a huge salary. If they were to keep him on the one year deal there’s no saying he’d then accept what was offered for the following seasons and we could then be left without Tomkins in addition to other lads they may have already lost by that point in Bateman and Gildart.

Make no bones about it though if we are letting Tomkins go at the end of this season then the club better have managed to replace him in addition to tying down Gildart and Bateman. If those two follow him through the door then you really have to question what’s gone on.

looks to me judging by the recent announcements that we are looking to tie down other individuals with the money to be "saved" rather than bring in a replacement Marquee signing.

I think we'll go on to tie up Gillers and Bateman in the coming weeks and go for a 7 for 2019 - which frees up Powell back to Hooker when Tommy retires. we have Escare, Sarge and even Budgie who can play at FB. its not a magical replacement for Sam but IF Zak Hardaker was then to come for 2020 why would we bring in a replacement for Sam in the meantime on big money just for one season? it would almost contradict the reason why we would most likely be letting Sam go in the first place, should he be going that is.

Can't be to save money. The marquee cap means x amount of money is taken from the cap with the additional to be negotiated between the player and club. So if for example; Sam was on 300,000 a year, 150,00 off the cap with a negotiated 150,000. If they decide to keep Sam on marquee and only offer him say 200,00 total, it would still be 150,000 off the cap and 50,000 agreed between Sam and the club. The 100,000 saved by by club cannot be spent on other wages.

If Batty was the marquee player rather than Sam then more would be charged to the salary cap.

yes, if in your example we offload Sam and do not replace with another Marquee, Wigan have 150,000 to play with. that's my point.
