Gutted. If we've lost out two years on the trot, then what the hell is the point. We have reached a plateau and seem not to want to make the next level. Turning down the chance or not pushing for the chance to play a top NRL club is just wrong. In fact I haven't yet renewed and I won't if we don't show the ambition to make it to the next level and mix it with the big boys.
If it comes out that the club have turned it down, I'll be a fairly infrequent visitor to the John Smiths next year. What would be the point if the club doesn't want to move on to the next level?
I am absolutely disgusted by the inclusion of St Helens in the World Club Series.
I want to know what's happened.
It can only be one of two things - either the club was never allowed the game, or they turned it down.
The club needs to tell us which it was. First thing tomorrow.
And if it was not offered to us, then they should make a lot of noise about it.
It should be Huddersfield Giants vs Sydney Roosters.
There will be some criteria for the third game this was outlined on the super league website from the RFL. The giants won 3rd place on points difference but Saints actually won more super league games than the giants so if there is some "make up" criteria this could be one part of it. All saints fans know the Giants should have had this game so we were a little surprised to get this gig, a missed opportunity from the Giants or a by pass from the RFL, we should have some transparency from the RFL or is it a Red Hall Taboo.
I'm dissapointed at this as I would have gone if played in Huddersfield. It should have been given to Huddersfield so you would think Ken Davey turned the chance down.
If he didn't it's a pretty poor decision by the RFL.
IF, we turned it down due to being unwilling or unable to pay the costs of the opposition, then as fans, would you rather we spent the money on imroving the team or the academy or the facilities?
i get that people think it's unambitious from the club, but if we don't have that sort of money spare then would it not be wiser in the long term to spend it on the playing staff?
yes, i'm disappointed we aren't in it, but we can't have it both ways can we? we can't complain that the team aren't winning things and then complain when we spend money that isn't going to improve team affairs. without more people coming through the gates, we will never improve as a club, and by not coming to games because you don't agree that *IF* we have been unwilling to stump up the cash for the WCS, but then complain that the club wont fork out for new players etc, the simple reality is without more people through the gates, we won't be able to go to the next level, and walking away and taking your money with you is only going to make the problem worse.
and yes, hosting a game in the WCS could be the spark we need to take us higher, but we will never know as we weren't awarded the game.
Interesting quote from Ken himself in the last edition of the Fe Fi Fo Fum fanzine back in January (Which I really liked BTW, pity it stopped)
Finally just a brief word about the World Club Championship. When we are the Grand Final Winners we will be delighted to participate in what we believe is a really meaningful and important fixture. It is great to see the top club from each hemisphere go toe to toe for the right to be called the World Club Champions. We do not believe however that this importance extends to the matches between the 2nd and 3rd clubs. Quite simply we cannot see its merit as a meaningful game.
Read it yourself, it's on page 5. It goes on to say that the club didn't want to take the financial risk.
I missed this the first time around, and noticed it this morning.
Now, I have an enormous amount of respect for Ken Davy and what he's done for the club, but he's totally wrong on this one.
Totally wrong.
Reading that, it seems very likely that the club has refused to take the step up to play a keynote match against the Australian minor premiers. That's bitterly disappointing and lays bare the lack of drive and ambition at the club.
Frankly, I don't understand this attitude from Ken Davy. He's spent a fortune rebuilding this club from nothing, and now it stands on the brink of joining the very top tier of clubs yet he seems totally unwilling to push on. Why? Has he lost his nerve? Has he run out of money? Has he simply lost interest?
He has tolerated years of stagnating (in fact, falling) crowds and an underperforming administration that clearly has no idea how to turn it around nor even any interest in the problem. Why?
What's going on? Why is he throwing money into the club while not expecting, no demanding, the very highest standards in everything the club does? It's not as if he isn't spending the money anyway.
People will say "It's his money so he can spend it how he chooses". But his problem is that's also true for everyone else. Noone has to spend their money with the Giants whether it's ten pounds or ten million pounds. And he's finding that it's bloody hard to get people to spend their ten pounds if they don't see something exciting to be a part of.
When I hand over my cash, which is every bit as hard earned as Ken Davy's cash, what is it that I'm buying into? What am I supporting?
Not participating in the World Club Series is a fundamental strategic mistake. It shows to the entire RL world, and the people of the town, that the club hasn't the courage to compete against the best. Is that something that the world's best players would want to be a part of? Probably not.
Stand up Ken. Show us some ambition.
