Question : Sat Oct 03, 2015 12:19 pm
Is there another sport (mainstream) where to gain promotion to a higher league you have to beat teams in that league before you can join them, even though you have greater restrictions on how much you can spend on your squad than the teams you HAVE to beat because for the life of me i can't think of one . I think that we have been denied the chance of promotion (all champ clubs ) for so long that maybe the size of the challenge faced hasn't been fully understood. How can you have half the teams in a qualifying mini league being denied the chance to compete at the same level as the other half. I understand that at the time of squad assembly teams are in different leagues so it's expected they have different restrictions and you can't know which team will finish in which position, that's what leads me to think that rather than the salary cap imbalance the answer would be as has been said on other threads the best two teams from the lower league and the worst two teams from the higher league deserve to swap places, but 99.9% of the time inter league play offs is only going to end one way, the way of the higher league team. If we are to have play offs then surely they have to be against teams in your own league using the same operating rules , both for promotion and relegation.

Interesting question but one I am sure you would not be asking if Leigh hadn't blown their chance by naive performances in the qualifiers.

Re: Question : Sat Oct 03, 2015 2:27 pm
Quite possible but still valid i thought, i got caught up in the "wow how good are we " and thought that bottom SL teams would be a stern test but we would prevail, but it does take me back to when Hudds were relegated to the NFP (i think),i thought then that we would have no problem beating them as they had consistently finished bottom of SL and we were in a red hot period playing wise, but that showed the gulf between the two leagues as Hudds kept full time status and SL players (parachute payment) and the same when Salford were relegated. it seems it has always been stacked against non SL teams with KR being the exception.

Re: Question : Sat Oct 03, 2015 9:46 pm
The whole thing is designed to have the best chance of retaining the status quo & not upsetting the SL apple cart.

I have said this elsewhere & will say it again ...

If a Championship Club can prove to the RFL by say a set cut off date that they have the income from average attendances/ticket/season ticket sales, sufficient revenue streams/sponsorship/director & board contributions etc, they should be allowed the same or at least much closer cap to SL.

In the same way that the RFL used to look at revenue streams/business plans etc when awarding a franchise to SL, they could look at Championship Clubs again regarding the cap.

What is to stop DB or the Bulls Directors from lodging say £1million *arbitary sum plucked out of the air* with the RFL *if they had it* to he held by the Governing Body as security against any overspend should attendances revenue predictions not materialise ?

If any RL Club can afford it, why can they not spend it *full cap*.

I would be very surprised if Wakefield were in a better position than Leigh or Bradford & possibly even Fax.

P&R is not here, but the smallest of carrots has been dangled.

FWIW, I think that DB is right to pressure the RFL into a cap rise for Championship closer to that of SL.

If SL get £1.8m & Championship £1m then why not the very best Championship teams getting £1.5m & all other Championship Clubs say £1.25m (if they can prove affordability) ?

These are just my thoughts & ideas, but at least I have considered them, how much time do the RFL take in considering the bigger picture ?

It is all well and good looking at the bigger picture but despite all the financial disadvantages this season Leigh had seven opportunities to reach Super League and blew at least three of them which had nothing to do with Caps or Finance but all to do with on field awareness. Everyone was over the moon with the system at the beginning and at the end of the normal season, even into the qualifiers, it was only when the points started slipping away that excuses were sought.

I agree with Reffy.

Lets hope we do it next season.

Oh and re Bradford today I thought they might have won had they not missed that penalty kick. Great game to watch tho.

I remember the days when Superleague clubs used to regularly thrash Championship sides so the gap is narrowing.
