League Winners? : Mon Jul 27, 2015 8:55 am
League Leaders! What an awful title, a complete misnomer. The word “leaders” implies that the league season is ongoing – it isn’t. It’s over and at the very least the winners (congrats to Leigh - brilliant lads) should bear the title League Winners. However, personally I would still find that unsatisfactory. Leigh have just triumphed after 23 games in the Kingstone Press CHAMPIONSHIP. Surely the winners thereof must be deemed CHAMPIONS, otherwise why is it so called? I’d be interested to know if I’m alone in being narked by this.

This has been discussed to death in SL where the League winners got virtually no recognition....not even a trophy originally. The Champions were the team that won Grand Final. I think Leigh are Champions as who else could be called that.

I agree. It is pretty ridiculous.

In Rugby League whoever wins the Grand Final is usually the Champions.

But as there isn't a Grand Final under this new format I'd say that makes us the Champions :D

That was my point Nozzy. Unlike Super League (and the Championship last time out) there is no climactic continuation of the league. Last year I didn't have a grouse, this year is different. Yes, I think of us as the Kingstone Press Champions but would prefer the title recognised by the RFL.

You correct - the League is finished as the 8 below the Top 4 are in a different comp now - pretty poor on behalf of the RFL to not sort this out. It's not difficult.

“After playing 23 fixtures, the 24 Super League and Championship clubs will split into three groups – theSuper 8s – based on league positions. The top eight will continue as Super League, the middle eight will be the Qualifiers and the third eight will be the Championship Shield.” (Source: http://www.rugbyleaguechampionships.co.uk/rlnewera ).

So the RFL in their infinite wisdom will be affording the title Champions to a side that finished the regular season between fifth and twelfth place in the Championship. They need collectively head-tackling! In the absence this year of the Championship play-offs, the shield should go to the Championship side finishing highest in the Middle 8s or at least to the side that finishes highest in a sub-league based purely on the six games between those four clubs in the 8s. Still miffed. :DEPRESSED:

They won't, the winner of the Championship Shield Super 8 will be the Championship Shield winners not Championship winners. We're the Championship winners for finishing top of The Championship before the split. They've got it right giving the League Leaders shield to The Championship winners after 23 rounds, maybe there's too many shields knocking about & it should be The Championship Bowl Super 8 or something.

No thanks. I'm happy for Leigh to keep it.
