In the mid fifties the back line I remember was Frazer, Bevan, Challinor, Naughton, Gilfedder, Price, Helme,
About 1956 Price went to St Helens and Helme retired. Prior to this we signed Jack Edwards and Martin Regan and shortly after Bobby Greenough. Edwards and Greenough evolved into the half back partnership and Regan became a utility player.
The first choice back line-up was then Frazer, Bevan,Challinor, Naughton, Gilfedder, Greenough, Edwards.
Towards the end of the fifties we signed Terry O'Grady who played left wing whilst Albert Naughton went to loose forward and Gilfedder went into the centre
I would add that Gilfedder was a big, strong, speedy player who was capped as a back and a forward. When injuries necessitated he could play in the pack or in the backs as winger or centre. His distribution was not his strong point however and towards the end of his tenure at Warrington he played more in the pack.
That is my recollection of Laurie Gilfedder apart from the fact that he was and, no doubt still is, a gentleman who was very approachable. Paradoxically I sometimes think that was his weak point. In the era of the biff he was too nice.
To answer your question I am not a betting man and the word wager was not meant literally but, from memory I would say Gilfedder played as much on the left wing as in any other position.

Before he went to Union he was a class player. Never been the same since. If you say he would feature in your worst wire born team you really must get your P&B specs seen to.

I've not done a head count or followed the ins and outs on this thread but given the number of names being banded about, if he's not in the 'best' team he must currently be in the 'worst' team? :)

As far as his RU stint is concerned it did seem to sort him out to be fair, but, I think "class" might be a stretch for me for his pre-kick and clap days

Wasn't the original question to put together a team of players who have played for Warrington who were actually born in Warrington ?

At the end of the day UR it is all down to opinion I suppose. I am as P&B as the next man but, when you think about it, there is a dearth of top class Warrington born players and when you further restrict it to those who have actually played for the club, you struggle. I might be wrong but didn't Joel Tomkins gain international honours?
Ideally I would have put Gilfedder in the second row but I could only think of Foster as a top class Warrington born winger and Gilfedder did play winger/centre/second row.

Thanks for getting back. I remember Gilfedder playing the odd game at centre. But when I was watching Terry O Grady & Bev were the wingers. I never saw him play on the wing ... but the mind plays tricks. He was very popular player. It's interesting that the wing position is not mentioned on Wiki. I never saw Gerry Helme but my dad loved him and Harry Bath.

If that is what Wiki says, I am confident that Wiki is wrong. Believe me Smiffy he played mainly on the left wing for a few seasons although his considerable athleticism was utilised in a number of positions to cover for injuries.

Wiki is often wrong. I remember reading on Wiki that an Aussie player (who we were chasing at the time) was now a "Warrington Player" ... and it never came about. As a youngster (aged 11) I remember being totally gutted when he signed for Wigan. As I am reminiscing I remember me dad would drive to Stockton Heath (from Appleton Thorn) to pick up the Football Pink on a Saturday night ... especially if Wire won.
