Integrity of SL now on the line : Tue Nov 29, 2016 8:42 pm
Sandow
Sayegero
Solomona

3 players in the space of a few weeks turning their backs in the middle of a SL contract.

Not a great situation for our game at all and when you factor in Pritchard Taylor and Carnet have all left SL too, our competition seems to have gone backwards considerably.

What can we do to stop the rot?

Re: Integrity of SL now on the line : Tue Nov 29, 2016 9:42 pm
The NRL & SL need to agree that a players registration is valid in both competitions, so that players can't simply walk out of one contract and into another on the opposite side of the world with no penalty, compensation, explanation or hardship. At the moment, the players have all the cards and can play the clubs off each other and with a slew of unscrupulous agents on tap they are proving very adept at doing so.

I don't care if Sandow & Sayegero are homesick. You signed a contract and you should either honour it, or buy yourselves out of it. Forget the fact that this is professional sport, in any walk of life if you renege on a contract there are repercussions to you personally, and also to prospective employers if they induce you to break a contract or employ you whilst still under one. This should be no different.

The clubs need to unite on this one and slap players and agents down immediately,

Re: Integrity of SL now on the line : Tue Nov 29, 2016 11:54 pm
RFL statement tonight....

Following recent reports in the media, RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood, said: "The RFL is extremely disappointed to learn that properly contracted Super League players may not be fulfilling the terms of their employment with Super League clubs as agreed. Contracts are two way commitments mutually binding on both parties. The RFL will support its member clubs absolutely to defend their contractual positions and will work with other similarly inclined Governing Bodies to ensure that the unacceptable potential anarchy of lawful contracts simply being walked away from, is not tolerated."

I'm not sure how much of a desire or appetite Leeds, Cas & Wires have to make an example of any individual, but I sincerely hope they don't brush this under their respective carpets, and the RFL show more backbone than is usually the case.

1. Ensure contracts are legally enforceable.
2. Seek damages for breach of contract.

This is unnecessary. In Sandow's case I assume his contract is under the jurisdiction of English law, so issue a claim for breach of contract.

It is necessary for the NRL to back SL. Technically they do, but if the Sharks want Segeyaro the support from the NRL is likely to be lukewarm. However, if they look onger term the NRL ought to back SL wholeheartedly, because the NRL is not immune from this with players wandering off to RU and NFL.

What I meant is that there is an extant legal framework to address these matters under Contract Law which does not rely on favours from the NRL to "back SL".
