The Russell/Ratchford Debate : Mon Aug 03, 2015 7:15 am
I swear had Russell been at fullback Saturday we would have won that game.
Its like When Matty is playing fullback we start the set of 6 at 100mph , however Steph has his own way of Running the ball back in which always just looks a little soft to me .
Just interested to see what people think ?

Re: The Russell/Ratchford Debate : Mon Aug 03, 2015 7:36 am
Both have different styles when bringing the ball back, Russell to make as many metres as possible Ratchford Glides as if on a day outing, both go down with the ball, but in broken play Ratchford tends to link more and has a better passing game.

As for Saturday I don't think it would have made much difference with regards to full back, to be honest I don't think either is the solution but both give 100%.

I dont rate ratchford as a FB at all.....I would have russell there over him in a half beat.

I dont know where ratchfords best position is.... to be honest, im not overly sure he has one.

I don't think it is a coincidence that we were in such good form before he got injured again.

From what i have been told, from a source not far from the horse's mouth, Ratch doesn't want to play at fullback but does so at the request of the coach.

Ratchford is absolutely wasted at FB. I would have stuck Evans at FB, and Ratch in the centre instead of that good for nothing biscuit.

We lost that game because of Tony Smith's initial selection, compounded by Anthony England and Roy Asotasi's complete inability to make any yards. Are there opta stats out yet for the game? Would love to know their meters per carry.

Another key factor was Monaghans inability to run like a winger.

For that try he went into touch from, he had plenty of time to get there... we worked the overlap, got the ball in his hands and he just couldn't get there in time.... Difficult to watch in all honesty.... Probably the only winger in SL that couldn't have finished that from there.... I wont even go into being clean through and caught by a PROP... The deterioration in his game since his brother left the club has been alarming.

I'm starting to fall into the 'jack of all trades, master of none' camp with Ratchford. I don't think he is quite good enough to be a regular in any one position for a top team, but he is too good to be wasted sitting in the stands waiting for an injury to someone else to give him a few games. If another team came in with the right cash, player swap or both offer then I wouldn't be upset to see him move on.

Playing Russell at FB wouldn't have made any difference.
We lost that game because for 30mins of it we had a massively poorer pack.
TS decision to rest Hill and Sims when we were on top but only 6 points to show for it, along with dreadful field kicking from GOB, were the main reasons for losing the game.

It frustrates the hell out of me why TS make fundamental errors every time we come to a big game.

Error one, make as little change to a winning team, so replace Russell with Rhys or Penny, instead TS makes 2 changes by moving Ratch to FB who isn't and plays Wheeler at r/c.

Error two, as I said above taking Hill and Sims off too soon, if you still have fuel in the tank and good tyres you keep driving until you have made a big enough advantage to take make a pit stop, without giving anything away. There was no need to take them off so soon and keep them off until the disadvantage was so great we burnt up reserves trying to make up the difference.
Chris Chester would have already worked out, whether out the storm of Hill and Sims, keep the score low, and attack while Wire run with Asiteasy and England. They executed that plan perfectly.
Chester out mastered TS as Wane out mastered TS.....

GF 2012. Playing with four forwards on the bench and dropping Hodgson who played the whole season at FB (pivotal hb role) that could have covered if we got an injury. Wigan worked that out and the rest is in the record books.

TS makes errors after error after error, we blame members of the team when they are shaat, well TS is also making shaat decisions that he thinks he is above because of his 3 CC win comfort zone. Well not from me.

Re: The Russell/Ratchford Debate : Mon Aug 03, 2015 10:30 am
i'm in the ratchford at FB camp, as have stated many times this season, but i would also say the the team set up/tactics aren't using him to the best of his ability.

Mark's right that our form has picked up with Russell back, kick returns are great, only thing i would say that hasn't been pointed out on here, his kick returns can be neutralised, like what happened in the saints game where they were putting high balls put for him to turn and retrieve, so he was getting nailed as he was attempting to start his runs.

We're not getting the best out of either of them, and now i'm thinking (as also has been said on here previously) we need an overhaul on tactics, to suit the players we've got, not the players we used to have.
