Wolves Ignite Top Four Charge with Warriors Win
Thursday night rugby saw Wigan Warriors travel down the road the Halliwell-Jones Stadium to take on the Warrington Wolves. Third places Wigan needed a thirty-nine point win to go top of Super League, at least until the Rhinos played Saints tomorrow evening.

Warrington, on the other hand, are nervously looking over their shoulders at the middle eights but have their destiny in their own hands. A loss from seventh could see them drop out of the eight by the end of the weekend should Hull KR pick up a win at Huddersfield and Hull FC pick up a win over the Wildcats with a big points swing in their favour. A win would see them up to sixth above the Dragons and looking strong for the super eights.

Both teams had everything to play for.

Top four before the split is definitely on for Wire. Bye next week then another home win over Saints in a similar game to today.

Why don't you just support your home town team Saddened? Are you a native of St Helens (or the offspring of parents who are) who now lives in Warrington, or are you just one of those weird Warringtonians who supports Saints for no apparent reason?

Either way you always seem to be convinced we're better than we are and on the cusp of world domination. Saints are better than Wigan and I think have still only lost once to us at the HJ in the entire time we've played there. We'll do very well to win in two weeks.

The family is from St Helens, we settled here in my youth due to closeness to work for the parents. I was brought up in Alan Hunte tops and it wasn't until I was about 8 that I realised Warrington had a team. I grew up in Westbrook then Birchwood and neither were RL focused in those days.

I think you saw last night how good Warrington can be. You are a top 4 side underperforming, just as Wigan are a mid-table side overperforming. I called you finishing the pre-split section in 4th a while back and still reckon it's on.

It's so hard to predict where we will finish because there are so many variables and it is very tight. The Hull teams play each other, Catalans have one home game (vs Huddersfield so a Catalans win there would be good for us) but play away at Salford, Leeds and Widnes so you'd expect them to lose all three of those (if so, and we beat Wakey, then we finish above them). Cas play Widnes at home, Wakey away and Hull away before us on the last day. You could see them winning all of those. Wigan have two home games so will probably win those although one is Leeds, so... Hudds play Hull KR so if Hudds win that, then with the Hulls playing each other any residual fear of the Middle 8s evaporates. If Hull KR win, then 5th at the split looks possible if unlikely. As I said, far too many variables, but I'd say we'll end up 6th but within 2 or 4 points of 4th and the possibility of making it to 4th by the end of the season. Watch us go and lose at Wakey now.

Fair enough Saddened. You're right about us being a better side than we've shown most of this season, but we're still far from great. Those variables TANCW posted have just wrecked my head, ha!

Does anyone know how the fixtures are structured post split? If we finish in positions 5-8 after 23 games I know we have three home games while positions 1-4 have four, but how are they worked out?

There's a table lurking around somewhere. I'll try and find it. But until season has finished, it'll wreck your head just as much as my variables.

Useful tables for Super 8s and Middle 8s - there you go. Scroll down the page.

So, if the split came now, we'd play Catalans, Hull KR and Wigan at home and Leeds, St H, Hudds and Cas away.

That wouldn't be too bad actually. Catalan is the biggest difference when it comes to home advantage so not having to go there would be a big bonus (except for those hoping for a summer jolly in Perpignan obviously).

Ettinghausen's gone ice skatin'

Wakefield is by no means a bye. Their confidence is up and with our injuries we will find it very tough...I'll be very happy if we come away from there with two.
