The overall standard of fitness and athleticism is obviously much higher than it used to be, and we do still see some very talented players, but I'm inclined to agree that the 'product' isn't as exciting as it could be. I think there is a real dearth of characters and 'showmen', for want of a better word, amongst modern players. There used to be loads - Hanley, Offiah, Davies, Edwards, Holding, Gill, Boyd, Sorensen, Andy Gregory, Harry Pinner, Bobby Goulding, etc. Since Briers retired I'd be hard-pushed to name any player who shows any sort of 'personality' out on the pitch these days.
