Planned Moves : Thu Dec 17, 2009 12:39 am
It may just be me but we dont seem to employ planned moves like we used to do. I seem to remember a planned move from the scrum when Langer was here that involved a run around and then normally ended up with a try.We also used to employ the kick straight from the scrum which we dont seem to utilise any more. Can anyone else recall any?

Re: Planned Moves : Thu Dec 17, 2009 8:29 am
There's the classic Warrington move from the scrum - loose forward picks ball up from base, ignores half back who's made an overlap & drops short ball off to full back who gets creamed by the opposition forwards leaving the scrum. Prize every time for that one.

I can remember about twice when we have used a kick over the top from the scrum - once for Kev Penny & once for Graham Appo. Why we don't use it more often with the pace of Riley, Mathers, King & now Atkins & Myler in the team I don't know.

There was a neat move Briers & Martin Gleeson used to do from the scrum that would see Gleeson coming in on short pass inside full back & winger creating an extra man & stepping inside to score. There was also the *** **** effort where he just dummied & legged it - usually against Salford. The best ever scrum move was against Saints where Scully picked up the ball at the base of a scrum on our 20 & dropped it off for Richard Henare who ran through the remains of the scrum & was over half-way before any Saints players knew what had happened. We lost that game by 2 points too!

There were a large number of amateur clubs who tried that move the next Saturday. There were a large number of wingers in A & E late on the Saturday afternoon suffering from concussion who had just been creamed by the oppostions loose forward coming extra quickly out of the scrum just praying that the aforementioned move would be run.

I was one of those loose forwards

Never mind "planned moves" let's hope we don't go into this season where our team go into a state of shock when we break the line!!!!!

It's been fun.

Re: Planned Moves : Thu Dec 17, 2009 6:01 pm
this season we seemed to have the kick to the corner for king to out jump all the midgets on the wing.
A million times better than wigans' tactics of run at the line 5 times waiting for a mistackle.

You will find that we dont have planned moves. We have planned sets and there are alot. Each player knows them all as they could be in any position on the field at that time.

We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie-in-the-sky

Re: Planned Moves : Fri Dec 18, 2009 10:30 am
There's the 'Warrington' from a scrum, which is essentially two X balls (aussies, whatever you prefer to call them), we certainly used to use it a lot more frequently circa 2004, but it's been toned down a fair bit in recent years.

Briers uses a lot of X balls is general play, usually most effective when he has Westwood hitting the 'option' angle and getting the ball on an unders line.

A lot of what was good under Smith looked somewhat planned, in that they'd hit one channel and swing it back through hands the opposite way.
