Watching old matches on YouTube : Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:52 pm
I'd forgotten just how fantastic the 2013 world cup semi final between England and New Zealand was.
I've watched this video about five times now from start to finish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHXX7r5RD0I Brilliant game. Brilliant commentary from (I think) Dave Woods and the others. Brilliant atmosphere. Heartbreaking result. If only Ryan Hall could have caught that intercepted pass! Does Jonathan Davies want England to win at rugby league? He sounds like he does, which is great. He scored one of my favourite ever tries in a GB shirt and he's a legend as a player and a co-commentor/pundit. Football is my first love and I'm also a big fan of loads of other sports, including rugby union and cricket, but for some reason it's the old rugby league matches that I most love to watch on YouTube. I think it's partly because there haven't been that many games compared to other sports, but it's also because there's something amazing about rugby league matches when the atmosphere is good and the game is really tense. The game is so fast and there aren't many breaks to kill the atmosphere, so you just get this constant wave of sound and intensity. The world cup final in 1992 is another one that I've watched many times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dxQtff761w . I remember watching it at the time and being gutted when Renauf (memorable for his hat) went over. Then there's this one, which is equally amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cH92KJExl8 . I love the Aussie commentators, especially during the Meninga try. I think this was probably the first Ashes series that I ever watched. I might have seen some of the 86 tour, but I can't really remember it if I did. I know that not every international rugby league match is like those above - there have been plenty of one sided yawnfests, unfortunately - but when rugby league is at its best, it's as good as anything any sport can offer. It makes you want to have the Aussies come back over so that we can have another crack at them. We can take them this time, I know we can! |
