Huddersfield turned down the chance to play. Disappointing but I suppose if nobody here is willing to put in £180k to play the game you can't really be too critical of Ken.

Should the RFL pay to host the game? I think there are better ways for them to spend £180k such as development officers

Tell me how you know that ?

The new young dynasty of super saints is coming to a ground near you.
Welsby-Dodd-Simms-Eaves-Rizzelli, not Eastmond...the future is coming.

seems the powers that be can pick and choose who plays in games based on how much money they have or how much they like em :)

seriously though i am disappointed from a giants pov, we might have got hammered, we wouldn't have filled the stadium , would have been nice to have earned the right though.

I agree, the Giants had earned the right to that fixture and would have raised there profile internationally. We will probably find out further down the track whether they were given the invitation to the game, I get the feeling they might of turned it down being the game of the least importance and potential financial losses over ambition.

I wish everyone would read bramleyrhino's post two or three times just to get it through some thick skulls

Mr bramleyrhino speaks a lot of sense.

People complain about fans shooting the sport down, but you can't blame them when we have a joke of an organisation in the RFL. You don't see this "make it up as we go along approach" in other sports. And if SL clubs have to foot the bill well that's just another farce right there.

That's one side of it.

The other side of it is that, as a sport, fans recognise that the sport is massively undersold and desperately needs to generate revenue.

The WCS is one of the few opportunities that we have to sell the "best in the world" of our sport. It's a massive marketing, media and commercial opportunity.

And people want to give that opportunity to a club that probably undersells the sport more than any other? They want to take this opportunity and plonk it in a stadium that is half full, watched by people on massively discounted tickets?

The RFL has been backed into a corner on this one because we only have a tiny handful of clubs that can actually market themselves effectively. It cannot afford to pass up this opportunity in the name of "sporting fairness".

You just set an order of who gets selected, and if one club qualifies under two categories, go to the next category. It's easy really.

1. Grand Final winners (WCC)
2. League Leaders
3. Challenge Cup winners
4. Grand Final runner-up
5. 2nd in league
6. 3rd in league

It really is simple.

There should be set criteria as above.

That would have lead to Huddersfield being the third club. Huddersfield should then have been required to take the game.

Clubs like Huddersfield should have the ambition to be in the World Club Series every year. OK in 2016 they might not have got as big a crowd as the other two matches. But things build with familiarity over time:

When the Old Trafford Grand Final first started in the 1990s the ground wasn't full and people wondered if the concept would take hold. Jump ahead to 2015 and it's regarded by many as the biggest annual event in the game and Old Trafford is sold out.

The problem with your scheme is it leaves no room for last minute wheeling and dealing and shady goings-on in smokey rooms. That just wouldn't suit the motley collection of second hand car salesmen and carpet showroom owners who run the game.

Sacrificing sporting fairness so that the RFL can appear to be competent in attracting large crowds is IMO a very weak mentality. So what if JSS doesn't fill up? It never does on any other televised game whether it be a SL semi final or a Challenge Cup match. It is a football ground for football crowds.

Having dug into it, I'm pretty sure that the problem is the Giants. Here's an interview with Ken Davy from last January.

On page 5 of this

http://4fsfanzine.giantssupporters.co.uk/Issues/Issue%206.pdf

Finally just a brief word about the World Club Championship. When we are the Grand Final Winners we will be delighted to participate in what we believe is a really meaningful and important fixture. It is great to see the top club from each hemisphere go toe to toe for the right to be called the
World Club Champions.
We do not believe however that this importance extends to the matches between the 2nd and 3rd clubs. Quite simply we cannot see its merit as a meaningful game.

Sorry to say, but it looks like this one is at the hands of the Giants.

People wonder why the team keeps bottling the big games. It's because the whole culture of the club is one of timidity and weakness. Davy is deluded if he thinks that attitude will lead the club to a Grand Final win. The attitude also explains why the club doesn't even try to grow it's crowds despite years of stagnation and endless criticism.

I was brought up to believe that it's okay to fail, as long as you try your best and learn from your mistakes. It's the trying that counts. I don't see the Giants trying here. Too scared to put their head over the parapet and play with the big boys. The fans deserve better. The players deserve better.

I'm so disappointed by the events of the last twenty four hours. It's revealed to me what an unambitious operation the Giants really are.

Sounds to me like a cock and bull story made up to cover the fact that the club that did qualify hasn't got the balls to stand up and compete.

Quite right.I don't see how people can really argue this 3rd spot situation which is the RFL's decision now due to one club winning more than one of the trophies. If Huddersfield had won one of the pieces of silverware required this season to enter the WCS and then been snubbed, then they have every right to kick up a fuss imo. They should be using this now as extra motivation, if any is needed, to go and shake off that chokers tag and win a pot next year and gain entry on true merit, not through the back door as a reward for being the best of the also rans.
