There was no original purpose. The staging of the event in Cardiff and Edinburgh never happened therefore it couldn't have exhausted or failed in it's original purpose. Any reference to 'original purpose' has been removed from the Super League history books. The event is now a massive success. The RFL say it's so therefore it must be so and their sundry nodding-dog acolytes shall therefore also deem it so. As a thank you for all your nodding-dog appreciation for all things Super League, the RFL shall be offering half-price Tragic Weekend tickets for half-price season ticket holder tragics for an event to be lovingly held on RL's very own doorstep. Manchester is now the new ideal and centre of excellence for all modernists and expansionists alike consisting of not one, but two theatres of dreams.
That cannot be discounted.
Oh, hang on... yes the game these days can be discounted and it has... and cheap at half the price too
All the RFL of the extraordinary need do now is fix it so that the Tragic Weekend fixtures feature top SL teams up against top SL teams, and whipping boy SL rabble up against whipping boy SL rabble. Throw in a whipping boy SL rabble derby fixture and BINGO! They get to maximise half price ticket sales on the back of flogging an extra round of meaningless SL games tweaked and dressed up as competitive and of vital importance. The nodding-dogs shall lick it all up and be begging for second, third and fourth helpings - or, more likely, the vast majority will bugger off after 80 mins of watching only their team playing. At least clubs like Salford and London get to post an attendance of 60K despite the fact there were less than 10K in the stadium at the time and less than 2K actually watching the dross.
Extra..... ordinary.

Wow, what a load of rubbish.
Don't you just love RL fans sometimes!
