The more he talked of his honour, the faster we counted our spoons.

Re: Wayne Bennett - New England Coach : Mon Feb 01, 2016 9:01 am
With the return of Sam Burgess I would say England now have a pack of forwards equal to Oz/NZ,if not better and I would say we have a genuine chance of taking the No 1 spot in the next couple of years. It should be an honour to be coached by a Rugby Legend such as Bennett and it can only benefit the English game as a whole. After Bennett I would appoint Brian Mac,who has proven all the Leeds critics wrong and in style.

I agree. Getting Bennett in some capacity would be great. I imagine players will be very keen indeed to play for him.

We won't begin to approach soccer as an elite in our lifetimes, and soccer does have the length and breadth, but then again what you overlook is that our elite league beats into fits already the support and finance of the overwhelming majority of soccer clubs in the country, most of whom draw attendances in the hundreds or not much more.

Soccer is pervasive due to its mega media domination, but that doesn't mean that at grass roots level tens of thousands pack the grounds.

The grass roots are not really the point though. Soccer has four, full time professional, divisions of around 20 odd clubs - we have only [I think] currently 15 full time clubs in total, and our second division is generally in a similar financial position to the Vauxhall Conference.

But it's not just in the UK where the problems for the England coach lie. Our International competition, which is what the England coach is judged against, is in the opposite position with RL in both Aussie and NZ being much higher up the food chain. RL is one of the two dominant sports in /Australia and whilst clearly second in NZ, this is to rugby union and there is a fair amount of crossover these days, with soccer just making up the numbers.

It's all down to money, of course. I guess if top RL players in the UK were on three or four million pounds per annum, with papers running around after them on a daily basis, then young kids would maybe stop dreaming of being the next Beckham and yearn to be the next Robbie Paul.

There's obviously a fair amount of up and down or ebb and flow in the relative positions of Eng/Aus/NZ and currently, imo, we're pretty much at the top end of expectations, and unless things change, [as in last paragraph] we're due to drop a bit.

We have had a pack of forwards to match the Aussies and Kiwis for many years.....Peacock, Sculthorpe, Morley, Hock (in his pomp), Cunningham Roby, Fielden, Graham and now the Burgess boys.

What we havent had is the backs, we are looking good with the Leeds boys Hardaker, Hall and Watkins, but are still short on a world class stand off and scrum half.

Re: Wayne Bennett - New England Coach : Tue Feb 02, 2016 1:46 pm
No surprise that McNamara has gone. Been on the cards since the end of the series win over New Zealand. It was not publicly announced but the objectives set for the English coaching and performance team was three wins from three.

Strangely the objective for the world cup was reach the semi finals (something that I'd have said was virtually impossible to not achieve).

I do think Bennett is s starnge choice given that he will be based in Oz. He's not going to see the upcoming youngsters that are coming through so how he's going to choose a side for the future I'll never know.

Makes it a necessity for one or two assistants to be based in England.

I think you need some better bait FA.

Failing that, a lie-down in a darkened room.
