He was inconsistent with his decisions, but then most refs are. All of the penalties he blew for were penalties, the simple answer is that we saw two teams with poor discipline today. The two big calls, which could have gone either way, were split 50/50. When Bateman lost the ball he could have called it as a knock-on, but gave us a vital pen that gave us a 2 point cushion. Then when BK had his run and the ball came free, again he could either have said play on or penalise wakey. You see those calls being made every game.

There's no room for this sort of trolling on these boards.

The phrase politically correct is in itself politcally incorrect so should be rephrased politically stupid!

speaking of refs did anyone else notice the strange behaviour of the in goal official at the away end?. Every time play was down the other end of the pitch he came and stood on the ten meter line in the middle of the pitch. It was almost like he was struggling to see the length of the pitch. Never seen an in goal official coming into field of play like that before.

No, they don't come much worse. he ruined the game with his whistle. Not much more he could have done than that.

No, it wasn't. If a player or players had strayed offside a fraction early, then it's what has been happening in every game of league, for years, at all levels, and as i said, unless players are visibly taking the proverbial, or else seeking to gain a big advantage such as at a short kick-off, then refs rightly let it go.

Do you want another example? Goal line defence. The further you go from post to wing, the further offside players stand waiting for the PTB. That's in every game. Is it offside? Well, technically, yes, of course. Should it always be blown? Of course not. The players are near enough, as long as they are making an effort, and the refs let it go. (We did have a spell, remember, a few years back, when the supremo declared it HAD to be "both feet behind the line". That was such a joke, and a shambles, that it was quietly allowed to die a welcome death.

Here, it was the second half kickoff, FFS, it was not a short kick off and hardly any advantage at all was even likely to be had. If the RFL decreed, like the goal line debacle, that as from this week, any player stepping over the line at kickoff will be penalised. Then everybody knows. Instead, the offence is ignored hundreds of times a season for years, then this bozo decides to ping one at random. That's my beef.

What made it far worse was his inability to see other, often, blatant, offides. Such as Wakey being between 2-3 metres offisde at two 20 metre restarts in the second half. Every person in the ground could see it, except Hicks.

Agreed, and although the prime fault for missing forward passes lies with the touchies, there were indeed several, from both teams, that any ref worth his salt would have pinged in an instant.

Maybe, but there certainly wouldn't be much in it.

It is, but one that again is rightly ignored, week in, week out, unless players absolutely take the mickey, like marginal offside at kickoff, or offside in goal line defence.

I can see he's really wound you up FA, but he's just an amateur compared to Russ Smith

Maybe he was struggling to understand Hick's interpretations so needed to get closer to the action and have a better look?

He picked up an injury and was struggling but carried on, he had to get himself in a position so that he didnt have to sprint and could see which side attack was going.

Yes Mr Hicks was poor (for both sides), but Wakefield suffered THE worst ever performance from Mr Child last season at Cardiff.
He managed over 40 penalties in 80 minutes !!!

It's quite amusing that both sets of supporters thought that they got the rough end of the stick yesterday.

Not really mate; a poor ref spoils the game for all speccies and tbh Mr Hicks wasn't very good yesterday.

I'm often puzzled by the positioning of in goal officials, especially when a try is scored. They go and stand by the corner flag on the side opposite the one from which the conversion is being taken. I can accept that the one at the end where the try is scored might be serving some useful purpose by doing this. But they both do it. Cant think what the other in goal official is looking out for.

Most are saying he was bad all round, for both sides, but if there was a rough end of the stick then the penalty count comprehensively confirms who got it!

It's much more frustration and disappointment. Though for some reason my voice is like Barry White's macho brother today. I didn't mind Russell as a ref, but oddly enough he is the last ref (indeed the only ref) I can last remember pinging us for offside at the kickoff,
