Leeds have confirmed that James Segeyaro will return to the NRL to play for reigning premiers Cronulla Sharks for the 2017 NRL season. Segeyaro, who joined the Rhinos midway through last season featured in both Super League and the Super 8 qualifiers.
Speaking about Segeyaro’s departure, Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive Gary Hetherington said, "We are naturally disappointed to be losing a player of James's quality and experience but he leaves with our best wishes and our thanks for his efforts last season.
"The compensation we have received is fair for a player of his ability and our dealings with the Sharks have been conducted in the best possible way. We shall be looking at ways in which we assist each other going forward. We are now focused on securing a replacement for James in the near future."
Segeyaro's return to the NRL represents more than an addition to the Sharks playing roster, with the Sharks and Rhinos agreeing to a partnership over the course of negotiations that will result in development opportunities for both Clubs.
Speaking about Segeyaro’s return to the NRL and the Sharks , their Chief Executive Mr. Lyall Gorman said "From experience we know what a positive influence James can have around a Club. He is highly thought of and he will be a very valuable addition to our NRL squad in 2017 and beyond.
"It’s been well documented that James struggled to settle in England and I’d like to thank the Leeds Rhinos for the compassion they have shown in allowing him to fulfil his desire for a return to the NRL. We are delighted that he will be in Sharks colours from next season.
"There’s still a few details to iron out but I’d expect that we’ll see some of the Rhinos young players come out here to experience how we do things in the NRL, and there’s a possibility for some professional development opportunities for staff from both Clubs as well," Mr. Gorman added.
"Certainly the latest ground breaking opportunity is there to form a lasting relationship, one that we all can learn from."
