Seen a few not happy about this on twitter because Ward plays for Leeds and we had a bad year. One or two thought Matty Ashurst should have been given a go
Could it in fact be that he doesn't play for Leeds, or more correctly, hasn't played very much for Leeds.
his upturn in form coincided with leeds signing a proper, qualiy hooker.he got quicker service and attacked/defended further out
While that may well be true, but Watkins had started to look sharper and faster too. But you could also claim it coincided with Hardaker leaving the dressing room and taking his negativity with him.

Watkins is very frustrating because you can clearly see the guy has everything to set him apart from almost all in his position worldwide, yet he can go missing for not just spells in games but weeks in seasons.
I do think he will be extra motivated to do well though for England in the upcoming games, i hope he does.
19 Man squad for the game against France this weekend
Kevin Brown George Burgess Thomas Burgess Daryl Clark Mike Cooper Liam Farrell Luke Gale James Graham Ryan Hall Josh Hodgson Jonny Lomax Jermaine McGillvary Mark Percival Stefan Ratchford Scott Taylor Stevie Ward Kallum Watkins Elliott Whitehead Gareth Widdop
Sam Burgess suspended and Sarginson, Bateman, Hill & Williams not selected.
One of the HB's to miss out, probably Brown and probably Ratchford too.

From that I would go
Lomax McGillvary Watkins Percival Hall Widdop Gale Graham (c) Hodgson T Burgess Farrell Whitehead Cooper
Clark Ward G Burgess Taylor
Though to be fair any combination of that 19 should be good enough to beat the French.

Its not really about beating the French, it is more about getting your combinations sorted, thats why I don't understand resting a couple from the GF as he seems to have done with Hill and Bateman.
The only change I would make to the 17 you said would be putting Ward in over Farrell. Ward and Watkins had a good combination on the right for us last year and imo Farrel isn't physically strong enough when playing against NZ or Aus especially playing next to percival so we are better off with Whitehead on that side.

England Victorious in French Friendly England travelled to the Parc-des-Sports in Avignon for a, pre-four nations, warm up game, the first under the custodianship of Wayne Bennett. Bennett gave five players their England debuts to herald the start of a new era; St Helens' Mark Percival and Jonny Lomax, Hull FC's Scott Taylor, Castleford's Luke Gale, and Stefan Ratchford of Warrington. Stevie Ward missed out on the seventeen after being a late addition to the squad.
This was an important build-up game ahead of the four nations with Australia, New Zealand and Scotland which gets underway next weekend and expectations were high for a big England win against a France side which was essentially the Catalans Dragons.
