JJB to Retire? : Sat Jul 04, 2015 4:42 pm
Was thinking about this the other day.

We now have a really good crop of back row forwards at the club - Ablett, Ward, Delaney, Achurch, Keinhorst & Walters, with Clarkson to come back off of loan and Minchella maybe ready to make the step up.

JJB has been quite injury-prone over the last few years and turns 34 in August. No doubt we can get him back fit for next season, but the question needs to be asked as to what he'll still be able to contribute, the risk of his ongoing fitness and whether he merits a starting spot. Given that we've managed well (largely) without him this year, is it time for Mac to have a quite word and advise him not to put himself through another year?

It'd leave us next year with:

SR: Ward
SR: Achurch
LF: Ablett

R: Delaney

Reserve: Keinhorst, Walters, Minchella, Clarkson (?)

I know there are still reservations over Achurch, but he's looked best when given a starting birth out wide - unfortunately far too often he's been used as an interchange prop, which is clearly not what his game is suited to (despite his large stature).

There's also a question of Stevie Ward's long-term potential. When coming through the academy he was billed as the heir-apparent to Sinfield, yet since 2012 we've seen very little of his ball-playing or organisational abilities. Is there a case to start Achurch & Ablett on either side and put Stevie in as a ball-playing LF?

When he's fit, JJB still merits a place in the 17 IMO.

If you can restructure his contract to get him into a situation where he's on a more appearance based deal, I'd have no problem with having him around next year even if it's just for 12-15 games. Particularly if the intention is to play a big man at 13, whether that's Cuthbertson or Singleton.

With the option of Sutcliffe at 13 or an extra prop. There is variety but at the moment I'm not sure how you can put Achurch as a starter he has his own injury worries that he can't seem to get over. Can you rely on somebody like that.

As for Ward I think he has nailed down his position in the back row this season and before last night's injury he was really pushing on. Hopefully he isn't out for long.

With sinfield, peacock and Kylie leaving I would like to see jjb stick around for another year at least.

achurch isn't, and never was, more than a squad player. nowhere near good enough.
I think JJB must be thinking about finishing but i'd like one more year and use him sparingly and when we need him most

Unless we need to make space in our 25 man squad then I don't see him retiring this year as essential.

If we can use him sparingly and even get a useful 10-15 games out of him he offers experience in a set of forwards who are losing a lot in Peacock and Leuluai. Also a big personality and character at the club which should be considered when we our losing our 2 big leaders at the end of the year. I Imagine it'll feel quite weird to the squad around the training pitch and dressing rooms initially next year not seeing Peacock and Sinfield around the place.

Re: JJB to Retire? : Sat Jul 04, 2015 6:39 pm
I'm really not sure the claim about Achurch stacks up, especially his fitness, and especially in regard to JJB.

Achurch hasn't set the world alight no, but when he's got a decent run in the side at SR (notably early last year and this, before injury) he played well. Unfortunately he's been used far too much as an interchange prop - a game he's not suited for, and certainly less suited for than other more compact back rowers (e.g. Delaney).

But in terms of fitness, he's been markedly better than JJB over the last three years. Since Achurch arrived he has made 61 appearances to JJB's 47, and scored 11 tries to JJB's 7. This despite being used off the bench and (I'd hazard) having similar minutes to JJB. Certainly he is much more likely to be available to be selected - recognise that he has been left out of the side when fit, which I can't recall happening to JJB.

Also their comparative stats for this season:

Stat: JJB - Mitch

Apps: 7(1) - 3(12)
Tries: 0 - 2
Carries: 107 - 113
Metres: 687 - 762
Gain: 6.42 - 6.74
Tackles: 266 - 306
Misses: 20 - 18
Offloads: 7 - 14
Penalties: 5 - 1

If we can sign a quality BR then i'd be more comfortable with Jjb packing in but as others have suggested IF we can get him fit for 10/15 games he'd be worth keeping around but as a rotational option because imo if we use Cuthbo/Singo at 13 the starting BR spots are covered by Ablett ,S.Ward and Delaney.
I think Walters needs to be out on loan for a full season and the way they've bulked him up too quick.
Achurch imo can go i like him in the BR but he just doesn't play enough games there either through injury or when he's switched to prop and with Baldwinson c0ming back along with Mulhern i don't see a spot for him.

Agree re: Walters. I think Achurch should stay - with Cuthbertson, Garbutt, Singleton, Mullally, Yates, Mulhern & Baldwinson we shouldn't need to use him as a rotational prop.

Depending on who else the club might sign I would agree with this......IF the club recruits another "marquee" antipodean second rower then I do think poor old Achurch's days are numbered.
He has been unfairly used as a prop though; a position for which he is undoubtedly unsuited.
