When we beat them at Langtree earlier in the season he had a little swipe at Aiton (who had a great game) and said something along the lines of he's not even that good but his Saints guys made him look like a world beater.

There's nothing wrong with criticism, it's the way you do it that matters.

To call your senior players disgusting in public is not the way a head coach should conduct himself and most certainly is not the way to motivate said senior players. If a senior player came out in the press calling his coach disgusting he'd be sacked or forced into a humiliating public apologetic climbdown.

It isn't the way to do things. After our 50 point mauling by Wigan in 2012 McDermott said:

""Wigan were on fire - they've done that to a few teams recently.

"They were very good. Sam Tomkins - you only have to give him a little gap and you're away.

"They gained some momentum early in the game and we couldn't get hold of them.

"I've been saying for a couple of weeks now that we're not where we need to be and when we are asked questions by the big teams we haven't been able to answer them. We didn't have the answers for that level of intensity."

He didn't hugely criticise the players in public. Yet the following day there was a "meeting" with all the players and staff including Hetherington at Kirkstall where I understand there were some harsh words said.

That's the way to do it. Y'know with some class and dignity.

Bob on mate. Too much management by media by some. Whilst I recognise the desire of a defeated coach to offer platitudes to appease the clubs supporters. It is a poor option, sum up the issues with out pointing the finger at individuals, pay respect to the victors and promise strenuous efforts to rectify the issues in training before the next game. Then get very frank with the team in the dressing room. That for mine is the proper way to manager performance.

Yep, he does come off as quite passive aggressive at times. Aiton was outstanding again, I bet his blood was boiling :D

Every player in our squad could probably earn more money with another club. But they prefer to sacrifice a few extra quid in their back pocket to share special memories. And playing at a place like Old Trafford on a night like this makes it all worthwhile.

Cunningham was very unhappy with his senior players. Watching Walsh "defend" I don't blame him, though he should have maybe kept it in house.

Saying publicly that his senior players were "disgusting" was way over the top IMO.

That's very emotive language to be using in an interview but to point it at his own players was a bit unnecessary.

Cunningham has a genuine belief that his players have the right win every game regardless who the opposition are (which isn't a bad thing), but to publicly lambast his charges when that doesn't happen takes it too far.

I'd imagine it wasn't the defeat that led to his comments but the manner of it. The "disgusting" comment is too far IMO but some players respond to public criticism, and some of the criticism was definitely deserved. 15 minutes in we were 18-0 down and had completed 1 set from 6. Walsh missed 6 tackles and only completed 6. As much as Leeds played well (particularly your backs), we were poor.

WHAT CUNNINGHAM WISHED HE SAID? Lifted from the saints official site, differs from what I remember hearing on the night, maybe he needs to count to 10 next time, the SKY cameras appear after a bad night at the office.

KEIRON Cunningham pulled no punches after his side lost 46-18 at Leeds.

"It was probably the worst start in St Helens Rugby League Club history," he said. "I don't think I have seen a worst start.

"You think we would have learnt a lot of lessons from the last time we played Leeds. We aren't playing against a poor team, they are world class and if you give them plenty of shots at the line they will score tries... and they scored plenty tonight.

"By the time we got some form of exposure we were 22 points down which is not good enough from this side.

"I said to the players, the expectancy is high at this club. You aren't playing at an average club; we would like to think we are world class too and that is just not good enough. If you don't want to play in big games then you're at the wrong club as we do want to play in big games.

"A lot of senior players let their teammates down today."

He continued: "It was horrendous but believe it or not there was some good defensive stuff in there - but you can't chase a game. It was like there was a party for first and we didn't get the invite. We sat there waiting and watching instead of rolling our sleeves up.

"This has been on the horizon. We weren't great at Cas and we were poor for 50 minutes against Widnes - and tonight our start was horrible.

"That said, I thought Jon Wilkin was phenomenal and tireless; he led by example but it was a pity 16 blokes didn't go with him.

"As a coach I have to take the brunt of this. As a local boy who is a spectator and an ex player I want to apologise to all the Saints fans who made the journey over here, on a Friday evening, to watch that debacle."

That is not what he said to the Sky cameras.
