Refs need help, they can"t watch everything so having three high quality officials is critical. Watched a Super rugby game this morning and they had two international refs running the line. I'm not saying Union has higher riffing standards (some of it is awful), but there may be something to learn. You also see the TMO now can judge on forward passes. They keep it simple and look for the direction the ball comes out of the hands and I think it works.

i really dislike the TMO and how it works in union, we have moved more towards it and it is awful. Especially the regards to forward passes.

I think the ref giving try/no try before the VR is a nonsense aswell.

Im a big fan of the VR in principle, I just think we are making such a clusterfsk of it that im coming round to idea of just scrapping it.

The Wilkin one the TJ had got himself downfield anticipating the kick. At the point the pass is thrown, he's three yards ahead of play so looking at it on an angle. Not the ideal place to judge whether a pass goes forward from the hands, which is all that matters. Where it ends up is irrelevant.

I take it the late hit on the kicker is no longer an automatic yellow, given the one Greg Richards got away with the in the second half?

the late hit on the kicker is an automatic yellow in the same way that a shoulder charge to head is an automatic red.

I agree, the new system of the on-field ref going try/no try isn't one I'm a fan of.

Like you, in principle I'm a fan of the VR and thought it was fine the way it was. Two problems it had recently though was, firstly the obstruction rule last year was making things farcical. Secondly sometimes (usually with Bentham) the VR seemed hell bent on trying to find the slightest smallest thing to not award the try even when the try seemed fine, watching multiple replays when it was obvious after just one or two showings that it was good.

They've somehow managed to take a simple thing and make it look complicated and a clusterf**k.

yep. sucker me. I still don't believe the refs deliberately cheat or the RFL is bent so I guess you are right

Said it for years the longer Refs/TJ's and VR's are allowed to produce mediocre performances without repercussions the worse they will become.
Now as mentioned by Tad Greg Mcallam did an excellent job of keeping them in check and standing them down when they weren't up to standard.
The RFL also need to over-haul the off field disciplinary process because when they get it wrong it's used as some sort of defence for the officials getting it wrong as well.
Basic consistency should not be a problem for a pro set up and before we get the "just enjoy the game ,they even themselves out over the season or Refs/TJ's & VR's don't miss tackles etc" their inept performances are having a direct effect on the game and sport overall which isn't good enough nor should it be acceptable.
I'd also cut this "no try/try" BS if they are unsighted then surely they are guessing to start with? just stick to a simple refferal but check EVERYTHING i.e markers not square etc in the event of a No Try so we get the restarts bang on.
