If Lee Crooks had been around today, with full-time professionalism and a different drinking culture, he could have been awesome. His handling skills were fantastic for such a big bloke.
Thats the unknown quantity on all of these fantasy threads.
There is no doubt that in that 1988 team there was a great drinking culture (Town Hall Tavern after that final - yup, I was there
)and in one respect its what bonded the team, on the other hand if we accept modern sports science then it would have had a derogatory effect on the players personal performances, we didn't notice it at the time because the drinking culture was widespread throughout all teams, the pitch was levelled.
One exception was Hilary Stanley of course, and we all know how far ahead of his contemporaries he was.
Can you imagine Schofield if he had laid off the booze and benefited from the sports science concepts in todays game ?
Or would he have been stifled, was his talent a natural talent that he didn't have to think too hard about, do players like that benefit from being moulded and manipulated or are they best left to their own devices - is Danny McGuire as inventive now as he was in his early career ?
If, what, how...
